The death of emoticons

I have looked and looked and looked: they're nowhere to be found. They should be in every text message, in most facebook profiles, in all emails somewhere, but no. Nowhere to be found.

I reluctantly started using emoticons when I first got a job. It was more out of being used to seeing them than because I thought they really brought something to my story. I found them childish. 

Then I found them useful. 

And used them so much all my emails were childish.

Thus, back to school with Generation Facebook kids, I expected to see them everywhere! But no: they do use points. Double points. Brackets. Slashes... All of them, but on they own!

Now, I couldn't be the childish-sounding one, really.

I had to readapt. 

Learn how to say Thank you with actual words, and how to try and be motivating (very important writing skill when trying to make a movie!) without smiling on my keyboard. 

Hard. Hard. Hard. 

RIP emoticons :(

Yesterday we had a talk about "Propaganda", and learnt about Edward Bernays (mnemonic: Béarnaise), who basically invented PR (his bio is here).

He was Freud's nephew, and thought a lot about how to rule the people by fulfilling their unconscious desires.

And contrarily to what they want to make you believe in Mad Men's first season, publicity for cigarettes didn't start in the 60's but in 1929, when Eddie paid a few models to light up “Torches of freedom” during the Easter Sunday Parade, in front of photographs. At a time when it was considered very rude for a woman to smoke in public.

I don’t know if I should like him for advancing women’s cause, or not like him for manipulating women into buying a health hazard.

I guess women’s cause would have advanced without him anyway.

About taboos

Wrong again

At drama class, we gathered in groups and prepared a performance based on a poem (my type of stuff!). 

We chose "Wrong again", from Sophie Hannah, and as you can see in this very bad quality pic - from a youtube video, sorry! - we came up with quite a litteral rendering.

Ah, and it doesn't show there, but yes, I did lick the guy's face.

I did the right thing once (may God reward me);

Manifeste!

J'ai déjà eu le mal de mer devant un film de Lars van Trier, mais je n'avais jamais eu l'occasion de lire le manifeste à la base de sa façon de tourner. Et qui est superbement immortalisé par Festen, de Thomas Vinterberg (ici, la meilleure scène du film, mais attention, c'est un spoiler....) 

Apparemment, le Dogme 95 a donné lieu à tellement de films pourris que les deux créateurs ont fini par baisser les bras et se concentrer sur autre chose...

Pour notre prochain projet on doit écrire un MANIFESTE, et tourner un film en accord avec ce manifeste. En gros, si on trouve que la vie est rose, on va filmer avec un filtre rose...

J'ai réfléchi un peu, et pour l'instant j'ai:

-un film ne doit pas forcément représenter la réalité, et peut inclure des éléments de fiction (en gros, si le protagoniste se met à danser sous la pluie, c'est pas grave M. Van Trier!)

-peut inclure d'autres formes d'art/ ne doit pas forcément être une vidéo (comme dans La jetée par exemple)

-Le public est intelligent: pas besoin de tout montrer, tout dire 

-Ce qui se passe entre les scènes est tout aussi important que ce qui se passe pendant

Bref, c'est creux. 

Vous avez des idées? heeeeeeeeeeelp!!!!

PS: j'ai changé les settings (quelle geek), normalement c'est facile de commenter maintenant!
